Support and empathy…

Children can learn to show support and empathy for others. How exactly does this happen? In The M.Y. Time Program we are consistently practicing self-care. When children first internalize this for themselves it is second nature to share it with others. In our full thematic lesson plan on self-care, children have a chance to participate in, Talk-It-Out-Time. Bringing children face to face and respectfully sharing concerns is hard work. It's a great way to learn conflict resolution and to let others know what you need.

Here’s an example of some “sentence starter language” that can be used when having Talk-It-Out-Time:

Begin by using the person’s name and try to maintain eye contact. “(person’s name), I feel _________________ when _________________________.” Each person has a turn to respectfully share concerns. Together the problem can be named with possible solutions being brainstormed. This (these) solution(s) can be shared with the adult in charge so that a check in can be made at a later time or date. Children feel secure knowing that a check in will be made to assess progress.
